Eric's Life And Times Of Dale Earnhardt...  continued - 1998-1999
1998

In 1998 Dale did something that to this day is one of the most memorable moments in NASCAR history!  On his twentieth attempt, Dale Earnhardt finally won the Daytona 500!  This is honestly the first race I can remember watching from beginning to end, and seeing Dale WIN!  It was the most awesome thing in the world, and now I was REALLY hooked on NASCAR racing!  The win snapped a winless streak of 59 races, the longest of his career.  Unfortunately, that was Dale's only win for the year.  He didn't have a very good season, scoring just five top fives and 13 top ten finishes in 33 starts.

This is Dale's 1998 Monte Carlo on the left, and his special car from The Winston on the right...

Unfortunately, this cool  looking car was destroyed in a crash during that race!

Another view of the crash

Here is another picture of it.  This is one of my favorite special paint schemes.

This is Dale's car from the exhibition race in Japan at the end of the 1998 Season.

The 1998 Japan exhibition race was the first time that Dale Earnhardt and Dale Earnhardt Jr. competed against each other in the same race!  Earnhardt drove the #3 Coca-Cola car owned by RCR, and Dale Jr. drove the #1 Coca-Cola owned by Dale Earnhardt Inc. Dale Jr. finished ahead of his dad in the race.

Dale finally won the Daytona 500 on his 20th try!  That was a really awesome day for NASCAR!
ALL the crews and car owners lined pit road to congratulate him!

Dale was VERY happy...  As you can see...

Since he won the race, Daytona USA took that car to display for one year
in their museum, as they do with all Daytona 500 winning cars.

Sweet Victory!

This is the on board camera view of all the people who came to congratulate Dale on his victory!
Virtually every member from every crew lined pit road salute "The Intimidator."

1999
Dale provided some down right exciting moments in 1999!  He won three races, really picking up toward the end of the season.  I thought that if he could only carry some of that momentum into 2000, he could be a contender for the 2000 Winston Cup!
He scored 7 top five's and 21 top ten finishes in 34 starts.

This is the scandalous Terry Labonte crash at the Bristol night race in 1999.  DALE DID NOT CRASH TERRY ON PURPOSE!!!  Dale said that he only meant to "rattle his cage."  Labonte and his fans thought otherwise.  This continued to be a hot topic of debate for several years after!
